DIY Sugars

Flavored sugars are mainly used in baking. But they can also be used on oatmeal, in iced tea, on fruit, on the rims of cocktail or in alcohol drinks, as fruit cobbler toppings, in yogurt, on pancakes or french toast, or when making ice cream or drinking tea or coffee. Lots of chances to up the flavor when using these sugars.

Coffee Sugar

1C Sugar (774c, 199.96k, 0p, 0f)
1t ground instant coffee granules (2c, .37k, .11p, 0f)

Grind the instant coffee granules into powder before mixing into the sugar. Use: Use when baking with chocolate. Nutrition: 48- 1t servings (16.16c, 4.17k, 0p, 0f)

Date Sugar

1C pitted organic dates, 1-1/2C sugar

Soak dates in 1-1/2C water for 30 minutes minimum. Remove dates and puree in blender with sugar. Add 1-2T of the soaking water to assist the blender in creating the paste. Add as much water as needed. Then dry the paste until it is tacky like brown sugar. Place in sealed glass jar and store in fridge.

Fruit Sugar

2T fruit powder (see below, choose one)
1C sugar (774c, 199.96k, 0p, 0f)

2T Blueberries powder (.91c, .17k, .01p, 0f)
2T Raspberry (.75c, .09k, .02p, .11f)
2T Strawberry (.79c, .7k, .1p, .05f)

Grind the freeze dried fruit (blue berries, strawberries, peaches) into a powder and mix into the sugar. Great on oatmeal, in yogurt, on pancakes, etc. Nutrition: 48- 1t servings (counts depend upon type of fruit powder used)*

Mint + Lemon Sugar

1t dried ground mint (2.5c, .5k, .2p, 0f)
1 leaf of fresh mint
1T Lemon zest (3c, .96k, .09p, .6f)
1C Sugar (774c, 199.96k, 0p, 0f)

Grind dry mint in your grinder and mix with sugar. Lemon is wet so leave it out to dry. Nutrition: 48 of 1t servings = 16.24c, .3k, 0p, 0f

Orange Vanilla Bourbon Sugar

1C sugar (774c, 199.96k, 0p, 0f)
1T orange zest (5.8c, 1.5k, .1p, .6f)
1/2t ground vanilla bean powder (1.4c, .1k, 0p, 0f)
1/2t bourbon (5.84c, 0k, 0p, 0f)

Combine all the ingredients in a bowl and mix thoroughly. Dry on a parchment lined baking sheet on the counter and when dry put into a jar.
Nutrition: 48- 1t servings (16.39c, 4.16k, 0p, 0f)

Orange Earl Gray Tea Sugar

1C sugar (774c, 199.96k, 0p, 0f)
2 grams of loose earl gray tea
1 orange zest (5.8c, 1.5k, .1p, .6f)

Dry the orange zest, then combine with the tea and grind into a powder. Combine with the sugar in a bowl and place into a jar when thoroughly mixed. Nutrition: 1t= 16.24c, 4.19k, 0p, 0f

Vanilla Sugar

1 vanilla bean (1.4c, .1k, 0p, 0f)
1C granulated or organic sugar (774c, 199.96k, 0p, 0f)

Open 1 vanilla bean and take out the seeds. Mix the seeds with the sugar and combine well. Then throw in the bean and put into a sealed glass jar for a week to combine flavors. After a week you can use the sugar. Nutrition: 48 of 1t servings = 16.15c, 4.17k, 0p, 0f
